Welcome to
To Blue Sands Academy

We invest in women and girls so that they can have the technological skills to turn their lives and communities around. The participation of women in the Nigerian tech sector is low. In a survey of 93 technology firms by ONE Campaign and the Center for Global Development, only about 30% of businesses were owned by women, mostly concentrated in e-commerce and enterprise solutions.

Of the 93 surveyed tech firms, only six had a woman in a top management position. Worse still, more than one-third of the survey tech firms employed no women at all. This is why we took it upon ourselves to engage young girls in ICT training, connect them to mentors that will guide them through a career path in tech.

The existing gap is commonly linked to negative stereotypes and insufficiency of role models in the tech space, lowering girls’ performance and aspirations with respect to science and technology, according to our findings. This is why at Blue Sands Academy, we give girls and women access to digital training, access to devices, e-library materials], financial literacy skills, economic empowerment, etc. Our strong focus also includes women and girls living with disabilities, poor women and girls living in rural communities. We believe in creating a balance for all women and girls irrespective of their demographics, status, class, cultures, etc.

Our women are trained with digital skills to scale up entrepreneurship. We believe finance and health are two areas that women and those with disabilities can use to become better individuals. In Nigeria today, only a few women/disabled persons have access to some finance like grants, loans etc because most women have this belief that only their male counterparts are entitled to some sort of financial assistance.

2018
Blue Sands Academy Founded

Blue Sands Academy was founded in 2018 by Alero Thompson, a women and girls advocate. It is an educational technology institution that is committed to promoting girl’s education and rights in Nigeria through advocacy, empowerment, business skills, financial literacy, capacity building and awareness creation. The organization also advocates against sexual and domestic violence against girls.

Equiping Girls and Women

Blue Sands Academy has equipped over 3000 girls with digital skills and over 2000 women in northern Nigeria with business skills, funding and support. We do this to achieve the three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) we have targeted which are SDG 4-Quality Education, SDG 5-Gender Equality and SDG 1-No Poverty.

Teaching women and girls

Blue Sands Academy started a program that teaches women and girls basic literacy, mathematics, simple science, general education on entrepreneurship etc. This program has been able to admit over 400 girls in Kaduna State Nigeria, that missed school due to gender reasons and terrorist attacks and over 300 girls have gained basic educational and entrepreneurial skills since inception and 274 of them have gained admission into universities of their choice.

These young girls are also encouraging other girls in their community to go back to school and to embrace education technology as a catalyst for the development of the girl child through school. This has helped to instill in them a sense of social responsibility and a commitment to helping others.
